When Captain Abraham's command was ordered into position at Davenport Bridge, Virginia, on May 18, 1864, the movement placed the 5th Cavalry in a dangerous position before the enemy defenses. Captain Abraham Arnold, realizing the danger posed by the alignment of his own troops against a superior force of Confederate soldiers, led a gallant charge under a withering fire to relieve the crisis. Abraham Arnold graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1859. He was the brother-in-law of Medal of Honor recipient Samuel Benjamin, a classmate at West Point who graduated in 1861. |
