Prior to the first Battle of Bull Run in Virginia on July 21, 1861, only five soldiers and one sailor had earned Medals of Honor. In the Bull Run battle alone, eleven soldiers and Civilian Contract Surgeon Mary Walker earned Medals of Honor. In the engagement with Confederate Forces at Bull Run, First Lieutenant Adelbert Ames earned the Medal of honor for his heroism in remaining on the field in command of a section of Griffin's Battery, directing its fire after being severely wounded and refusing to leave the field until too weak to sit upon the caisson where he had been placed by men of his command. Adelbert Ames graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of May, 1861. After the Civil War he served as Governor of Mississippi from 1868 - 70 and as Senator from Mississippi from 1870 to 1874. During the Spanish American War he continued to serve as a General in the US Army. |
