Corporal Nathan Allen was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the afternoon of July 2 Corporal Allen's unit was bearing the brunt of Longstreet's assault at Emmitsburg Road. When the color sergeant was wounded, Corporal Allen was given the National Color to carry. As the line of battle gave way, and was rapidly falling back under a heavy fire and fierce pursuit, Corporal Allen saw Color Sergeant William Kelren, who carried the State Color, fall dead over the flag. With that flag in peril of being captured by the advancing Confederate forces, in the face of a galling fire Corporal Allen rushed to the body of Sergeant Kelren, pulled the flag from under his body, and brought both colors safely off the field. |
