Born: Sep. 30, 1910
Cork, Ireland
Died: Jun. 3, 1945, Off the Coast of Borneo, Indonesia. John immigrated to the United States from Ireland and lived with his sister Mary Ellen Igoe in Brooklyn, NY; where he also made his living as a salesman. He became a U.S. Citizen at the age of 25 on Dec.4, 1934. Enlisting in the United States Navy, John was assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet Squadron 14-1, Fleet Air Wing Fourteen. During WWII, John was killed in action while on a search mission in the vicinity of the Macassar Straits (Borneo coast), on June 3, 1945. His plane and crew participated in a battle where two enemy transports were sunk. His plane was severely damaged and crashed in enemy territory. Avation Machinist"s Mate First Class (AMM1/c), John P. Igoe was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Flying Cross (Air Medal) and the Bronze Star. He is buried at the Long Island National Military Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY. Section D - Grave 11004.
