The recipient of Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidly at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action for his personal bravery and self-sacrifice. Airman Pitsenbarger participated and flown in more than 300 combat rescue missions in Vietnam, many of them under heavy fire. He was the first airman to be awarded the Air Force Cross posthumously. He wore the Air Medal with five oak-leaf clusters, recommendations for four more were pending. Was also awarded the Airman's Medal, the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Medal of Military Merit, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a bronze palm, the Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals, and the National Defense Service Medal.
