39   Medals of Honor are Accredited to Washington, DC

  • During the Civil War Pennsylvania's William Wray received the ONLY Medal of Honor awarded for action "on the ground" in Washington, DC.

  • Washington, D.C.'s Daniel Adams Butterfield received the Medal of Honor during the Civil War.  During the Penninsula campaign he also composed the song "Taps".

  • Washington, DC born EUGENE FLUCKEY recveived the Medal of Honor (as well as FOUR Navy Crosses) during World War II for his intrepid command of the submarine USS Barb.  In addition to his Medal of Honor action, "Lucky Fluckey" landed an impromptu mission to destroy a train, the ONLY ground combat action on Japanese soil during World War II.   The battleflag of the Barb is the only one to proudly display a TRAIN among the vessels "sunk", on its battleflag.

"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action At the Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty"
