The following Medal of Honor Recipients were BORN in the State of New York but either moved to or enlisted in military service in another state to which their award is accredited.  By virtue of their birth, they are still among our "Home Town Heroes".

  • New York born Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Daniel Butterfield wrote the song "Taps."
  • Born in New York City, John Lafferty received his first Medal of Honor during the Civil War and a SECOND under the name John LAVERTY 17 years later for non-combat heroism.  His awards are accredited to Pennsylvania.
  • Oswego-born Dr. Mary Edwards Walker is the only WOMAN in history to receive the Medal of Honor.
  • New York born William "Willie" Johnston is probably the youngest person ever to receive the Medal of Honor. At the time of his heroism he was an 11 year old Drummer Boy with the 3d Vermont Infantry and had just celebrated his 13th birthday when the Medal was actually presented to him.
  • The MOST DECORATED SOLDIER OF WORLD WAR II may not have been AUDIE MURPHY....but Buffalo-born MATT URBAN.   Due to lost paperwork however, no one was aware of Urban's nomination for the Medal of Honor until 1977.  Three years later President Jimmie Carter finally presented the Medal of Honor to the World War II hero who had already earned every military award available....many of them more than once.

"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action At the Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty"
