663 Medals of Honor are Accredited to New York

  • 8 of the Medals of Honor Awarded for heroic, non-combat action were for heroic life-saving acts within the State of New York.

  • 19 American soldiers have received TWO awards of the Medal of Honor in the history of the award.  SEVEN of these DOUBLE-PUNCH heroes were from New York.

"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action At the Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty"

Almost 20% of the Total Medals of Honor awarded have gone to soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who entered military service in the State of New York.  While it is often pointed out that in the early days of the award many immigrants to the United States entered military service in New York "by default", the fact remains that HALF of New York's 663 Accredited Medals of Honor were awarded to "Native Sons" born in the Empire State (326 of them).  An additional 141 New York born sons either moved or entered the service in other states, thus their Medal of Honor is accredited elsewhere.

All of these heroes can be found listed here but, due the large number of them and in order to both make your search easier and minimumize down-load time, we have separated the New York Medal of Honor recipients into 7 pages.  You can access them from the hyper-links below, then click on the New York Button to return to this page.
