8  Medals of Honor are Accredited to New Mexico

• During the Indian Campaigns, 18 Medals of Honor were awarded for action "on the ground" in New Mexico.

• Taos-born JOSEPH P. MARTINEZ was the only American to receive the Medal of Honor for WWII action on US soil outside of Pearl Harbor.  He was killed in action during his valiant attack on the Japanese in Alaska.

• One of the most closely guarded military secrets of the Korean War was the Medal of Honor award to Gallup Native Son HIROSHI MIYAMURA.  The courageous Nisei Army sergeant was captured during his heroic moment and military officials believed his life would be jeopardized in the North Korean POW camp where he was held, if word of his award reached the enemy.
