94 Medals of Honor are Accredited to New Jersey

  • One of the most recognized heroes of World War II, New Jersey's "Manila John" Basilone refused to stay at home after his highly publicized Medal of Honor award and returned to fight with his fellow Marines in the Pacific.  He was killed in action in the first wave of the assault on Iwo Jima.

  • New Jersey's Robert Sweeney is one of only 19 servicemen in history to receive TWO Medals of Honor.

"For Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity in Action At the Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty"
