8 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Montana

  • During the Indian Campaigns, 89 Medals of Honor were awarded for heroic actions "on the ground" in Montana.

  • One of the classic quotes in Military History occured when, upon presenting the Medal of Honor to Alder Gulche's Leo Powers, President Roosevelt asked the hero WHY he had performed such an incredible feat.  The small, mild-mannered cowboy replied, "I was just mad, I guess".
