29 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Kansas

  • During the Civil War 4 Medals of Honor were awarded for action "on the ground" in Kansas.  During the Indian Campaigns 8 more Medals were earned on Kansas soil.

  • The ONLY PERSON to receive TWO Medals of Honor during the Civil War, Lt. Thomas Custer, is buried at Fort Leavenworth.

  • Two brothers from Junction City participated in World War II's D-Day Invasion.  Walt Ehlers received the Medal of Honor for his actions there, his older brother Roland lost his life.   You can click on the green button below to read their story at our "Profiles in Courage" site.
