21 Medals of Honor are Accredited to Alabama

  • Henry "Red" Erwin was so badly burned in his World War II Medal of Honor action that he was not expected to survive.  A special flight was made to Hawaii where the only Medal of Honor in the Pacific was on display.  After breaking into the display case at Army HQ the medal was flown back to Guam where it was presented by General Curtis LeMay.  Fifty-four years later "Red" Erwin is one of Alabama's few surviving Medal of Honor recipients.

  • During the Civil War 121 Medals of Honor were awarded for action "on the ground" in the State of Alabama.
