Rank and Organization: Sergeant, Company F, 9th Michigan Cavalry. Place and Date: At siege of Knoxville, Tenn., 20 November 1863. Entered Service At: Adrian, Mich. Born: 27 April 1838, Sandy Creek, Oswego County, N.Y. Date of Issue: 5 April 1898.

Citation:

With one companion, voluntarily carried through the enemy's lines important dispatches from Gen. Grant to Gen. Burnside, then besieged within Knoxville, and brought back replies, his comrade's horse being killed and the man taken prisoner.
