I am a USMC Veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Orange County Chapter of the 1st Narine Division Association. I meet with Marines who knew Colonel Paige which led me to read about the Colonel. Just wish I had the opportunity to meet and speak with this American Icon. God Bless! John

I heard this story today on a radio show and have spent the last hour reading this incredible account. I am astounded at the bravery and heroism that was displayed. I am aware that Mr. Paige has since left this earth to join our Father in Heavan, but I am none the more astounded. Reading this first hand account made me feel like a young man sitting at the foot of a valiant, honorable man. Mr. Paige I think you for your service, faith and the example of what it is to be a man in hard times. To your family, I am honored to have read his story and am blessed to have heard Marilyn recall her husband on the radio (Frank Pastorie Show - 3/23/09). Praise God for men like Mr Paige, who have preserved our freedom and given us the gift of his service and life. I think of those lost at Guadalcanal and I mourn for them. Praise God that these men sacrificed so much so that I can live in a free society. THank you all for your sacrifice and service.

As I write this entry , it is Veterans Day 2008. I met Mitchell Paige on Nov. 10th 1995 in Boston, MA for the Marine Corps Birthday. He and 35 other MOH recipiants attended our Tribute to them. I read his citation before the evening began and I was in awe of the Heroism that he displayed in battle. I was lucky to have the privelage to speak to Mr. Paige after dinner and I asked him to sign a copy of his Citation for me. As I read it tonight, 13 years later I could'nt help but wish that I could have spoken to him again before he passed. My first born (a son) is due to arrive this December and his name will be Jacob Mitchell in honor of a man that reminds me of what being a Marine and a Patriot is all about. Semper Fi

I had the incredible honor to meet Col Paige while at 1st Marine Division, Division Schools, Camp Pendleton in 1996. I was to be pinned with a Navy Achievement Medal that afternoon, a few hours after Col Paige spoke to a huge crowd about his experiences and heroism. He came by our offices as part of the visit, and just as he's about to get in his car to leave, I came running out into the parking lot. When I reached him, I was out of breath and light headed, saluting without a cover while outside, and speaking between breaths. "Sir,...I am to receive...a Navy Achievement Medal... today, I would be honored...if you would pin it on." To my honor and amazement, he says, "I would be honored". Colonel, you were a Man among men, you are the Pride of the Marines, and you will always be a Hero for generations that follow. Semper Fi

My father, formewr Plt Sgt Raymond Weeks, served with 2/7 on the 'Canal as a machine gun section leader, he knew Mitch and stayed in touch with him until his Mitch's passing. My Dad was hospitalized in 2002 (age 82) and Mitch called him to offer encouragement, my father later told me "he talked like your pastor". Thank God for Mitch's demonstration of his faith and being a witness of his belief in God to my father. R/S R. Weeks Jr, Major USMCR (ret)

I had the honor and priviledge of meeting Col. Paige at the anniversary of the 1st Mar Div. in Pendelton back in the 90's. I belong to the Viet Nam Veterans of 2d Bn.,1st Marines and we were having our reunion at the same time. I was standing in the line at the chow hall, turned around and there was this man with the Medal around his neck. I was fortunate to have lunch with him and his wife that day, we sat at a table with some young Marines but I don't think the full impact of his presence was recognized by those fine young men and women. I grew up as a "Top Sgt.'s" son and met many Marine heroes in my life. Chesty, Gen. Walt, Col. North to name a few. None were as humble and truly a class act as the Col. His passing was a blow to all who understand the term warrior. My platoon Sgt., "Stormy" Matteo was one of these warriors and we contiune to have contact to this day. Men such as these fine gents are what led to our Bn. CO.( Col. Billy Duncan--"Pistol Pete") to coin the term Marine DNA. We all have that honor, courage, and commitment to God, Country, and our fellow Marines. Semper Fi and rest well my warrior friend.

Marilyn, I was truly saddened to read of Mitch's passing. I am forever honored in meeting both of you at Father Gehring's home in Orlando im May of 1993. To sit and break bread and to hear of some of his experiences was really special. After so many years of corresponding with him meeting a legend of the Marines at the Padres home was a humbling experience. It was really special as it was a private scene. I was extremely proud of how much he admired the plaque with "The Marine's Prayer" on it and that it was presented to him at the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans reunion in Colodaro in 1985. My father was an artillery Forward Observer on Guadacaal so I knew about the Col. from an early age. When someone I know is having a tough time I tell them to look up Prov. 3: 5&6. I use it myself. He is a hero in every sense of the word. Semper Fi.

I was reading a book called "A Table in The Presence" by a Lt. Carey Cash ,and in his book he talks about how some soldiers in Iraq lost a small green Bible in a sandstorm, then found it the next day and how happy it made them. Then Lt. Cash pointed out how "God is pleased (even delighted) to reveal through seemingly small and insignificant details the enormity and grandeur of His love and presence". Lt. Cash then told the story of MOH winner Mitchell Paige and how after his heroic battle on Guadacanal opened his Bible to the Proverbs 3:5-6, the same verse his momma told him growing up. Wow, priase God is all I can say. So I had to look it up on the computer as fast as possable and I am a better Christian and a man becuse of a man I never heard (of till July 12) this Saint who lived before me. I read another verse today before as I was eating lunch with my family( so once agian thank ya'll who protect our freedoms) and how true it is Proverbs 19:21 many plans are in man's heart, but the Lord's decree will prevail. God protect, and deliver our troops who call on You and also that those who do not know Jesus as thier Lord and saviour will know Him.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Colonel Paige at Marine Corps Base Twenty-Nine Palms in November of 2001while I was attending Sergeants Course. He was a guest speaker one day and I can truly say I have never met a more patriotic and dedicated man in my entire life. He was maybe 80 or so when I met him but he had such an energy and presense about him that put any young Marine to shame. I am sad to hear of his passing but we all know this great man's legacy will continue to be passed on from generation to generation. This year (2007) I actually met a few retired colonels who knew Col. Paige as well. What a small world we live in! We spoke for an hour about Col Paige and told great stories of past and present. The ages of the men I met that day were anywhere from 19-80 but we all shared the same camraderie and brotherhood as if we had served side by side. Semper Fi to those Marines who have given their lives, to those who will, and to all who serve. God Bless

I was working at a firefighter in La Quinta when Mitch was a guest of honor in a parade. I cannot remember what it was for but I remember feeling honored and read his story with great interest. My husband is a proud Marine and is currently in Iraq with the Ca. Nat'l Guard. His pride in the Marines has never waned and it was this infections pride and sense of duty and resposibility that prompted me to look up Mitch. For you Marilyn. My mother is Carolyn Carlat Bull. Through the years we have heard her speak of you and Mitch often. My oldest son (now a sophmore in college) remembers meeting you both at a gathering at Bob and Charlene Carlat's home. Now my daughter Nancy (sixth grade) is doing research for a report and power point presentation about Mitch's life and his heroism that earned him the Medal Of Honor. She is very excited about this project. I am sure she is not the first one to ever do a paper about Mitch for a school project, but I thought you might be pleased to know that a student(and relative) from Montana is showing an interest in this fantastic story and person. God Bless you, Marilyn. Sincerely, Lisa Gaskill P.S. We also have the Mitch Paige GI Joe figure, which all five of my children think is very cool.

I have to admit that I didn't know who Mitchell Paige was before today. My 11 year old daughter will be starting at a new middle school this coming year. It is located here in Palm Desert/Bermuda Dunes and is named after Col. Paige. After reading of his service to this country, Coachella Valley will be honored to have this school named after him. When I was a kid Mitch and Marilyn were my neighbors. They were great people, and we would love to listen to Mitch tell us about his exciting stories with regard to his life. He would also grab us and put us into one of his holds and say I can break your arm with my pinky, and he could to. One day the marines came by and put up a flag pole in his yard, and gave him a nice big flag for his yard. Mitch was a great man and I was sad to hear that he past. Colonel, I want to thank you for all you and your fellow Marines did in WWII. I was wounded by a mortar in Iraq, but in the hospitals at Al Asad and Balad, I told your story to several other wounded Marines who were feeling kind of low. Even the Army boys got a little motivated. I first heard yours and Sgt. Basilone's stories at Parris Island and from that day on, I'd think about your heroism and selflessness and even in Iraq, I'd get scared and then I'd think or say aloud, "this is nothing compared to what the devils went through at Guadalcanal or Iwo." I asked Uncle Mitch the other day when I was at my parents house to direct me to his book that he gave Richard, David and I. It was hidden, but I went right to it. I know Uncle Mitch led me to it. I do not know if you have ever seen my dad's collection of books, but there are hundreds. Anyway, I would like to come and visit you sometime. My dad too so maybe we can plan something. My family and I have beautiful memories when both you would come to visit. I miss Uncle Mitch because of his kind heart I will always remember him. Mrs. Paige, When i was 14 years old, your husbands story of courage and valor inspired me to become a Marine. 23 Years later in El Toro, I had the opportunity to meet the Colonel during a Professional Dinner, at which he was the Guest of honor. it is an Evening I will never forget. I am sorry for your loss. The Coprs will miss him also.

Unlike the other people who have signed the guestbook recently, I have never met nor have had any contact with Mitch Paige. For that matter, I had never even heard of him until I came across his obituary in the LA Times and was moved by his story, so much so, that for the time in my life, I wrote down information from the obituary section and tried to find his autobiography on the Internet. While no one seems to be selling the book, I am glad to have found this website, which I have recommended to friends. Mitchell Paige proved to be quite an inspiration to me, even though (or really because of) he no longer walks on earth. Heaven must now be benefitting from having him walk the streets there.

Dearest Marilyn, My deepest sympathy to you in your great loss. Mitch was one of the greatest American Serbian heroes of all times. He did for the USA Military what Nikola Tesla and Michael Pupin did for Science. One of my greatest joys was when my father passed on his A MARINE NAMED MITCH to me to cherish as much as he did. I thank you for all of your help and love to Mitch from all of us here in Pittsburgh. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Mrs. Paige and the rest of the Colonel's family. I am a third grade teacher and former Marine living in Washington state. Colonel Paige has been a hero of mine since I was a young Marine. So much so that when my son was born August 29th of this year, I named my son Mitchell in honor of him. I did so in hopes of providing him with a real, concrete example of a man of courage, a patriot and a Christian. Our country and Corps are the poorer for having lost him.

I love COL Mitchell Paige's testimony for the Lord Jesus Christ. As a side note, I collect Ultimate Soldiers and GI Joes, purchasing the GI Joe's MOH SGT Mitchell Paige Action Figure following its release in 1998. Just before and during the unveiling of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003, I served with the U.S. Army’s famed 716th Military Police Battalion -- the most decorated MP battalion of the Vietnam Conflict. I was also chaplain to two U.S. Marine Reserve MP companies attached to the 716th. (For six months, the 716th MP Battalion was attached to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force [MEF] until retrograding to the States in September 2003, when the Polish Army took over responsibility for southern Iraq.) When sending out Alpha Company (Lexington, KY) a few days after the Iraqi War began, I used the illustration COL Paige documents in his personal testimony on how Christ became so exceeding real for him during the times of heavy casualties at Guadalcanal in 1942. Those young MP Marines were so inspired, who, just a few days later, engaged a firefight with Iraqi Fedayeen forces. Thank the Lord no one was seriously injured, only shaken. I sincerely believe the Lord used Psalm 91 and COL Paige's testimony to inspire those young Marines, in whom he sacrificially poured himself into the corporate life of the Marine Corps with passion, honor, and dedication during his 28 years of devoted service. I would like to extend heartfelt condolences to the Mitchell family for the loss of their great American hero: Husband, (Great) Grandfather, Father, et. al. In heaven, I plan to shake COL Paige’s hand for allowing the Lord to work so powerfully through him – truly an inspiration and model of faith, indeed. Dear Col Paige, Very recently, while on the internet on e-Bay, I found someone who was selling an authenic Korea Era Medal of Honor. As I know that this is against the law, I reported this action to the CMOHS, the Hall of Heroes, and also to Senator Daniel Inouye, since he is also a MOH winner. As I know that you are a crusader against this type of action, I thought that you should know as well. The auction closed today and a United States treasure was sold for one thousand and fifty dollars. This auction was originated out of Canada, the bidders identity was protected, and apparently out of the reach of U.S. law. Should you, or anyone else interested in this disgusting act of greed, care to see the auction for yourself, go on line to e-bay and in the "search for" box, enter 2179750852. It is a shame that we let people get away with this sort of thing. Thank you for your time.
