Maus, First Lieutenant (Medical Corps), U.S. Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services on the Belle Fourche River, North Dakota, on 5 November 1877, in that while serving as Assistant Surgeon with a detachment suddenly surrounded by an overwhelming force of hostile Sioux Indians, First Lieutenant Maus succeeded in extricating the party from a most perilous position.
