On March 11, 1918, an Army private reported to the camp hospital in Fort Riley, Kansas, complaining of fever, sore throat, and a headache.  By noon the hospital was swamped with 100 additional cases, growing to more than 500 by the end of the week.  It was the beginning of the Spanish Flu epidemic that soon swept the world killing 20-40 million people.

More than 675,000 Americans died from the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 including 43,000 American soldiers.  Three U.S. Navy nurses and one corpsman charged with caring for victims of the epidemic at Naval Hospitals at Hampton Roads, VA and Philadelphia, PA received Navy Crosses for their courage in caring for the highly-contagious servicemen.  All four died as a result of their service.
