Joint Service Commendation Medal

(All Services)

For meritorious achievement or service while assigned to a joint activity.

The Joint Service Commendation Medal was authorized in 1963 and is awarded to members of the Armed forces who distinguish themselves by meritorious achievement or service, and may further be awarded for valor in this line of service. It is awarded by the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or other Department of Defense agencies.

A Bronze "V" device denotes that the award is presented for actions involving heroism or "Valor".

Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters denote subsequent awards.
(Coast Guard) A Gold Star denotes subsequent awards.

A Silver Oak Leaf Cluster is worn in lieu of 5 Bronze OLCs.

(Coast Guard) A Silver Star is worn in lieu of 5 Gold Stars.
