(All Services) For participating in an expedition, operation or support of a U.S. Operation in Antarctica after 1 Jan 1946 to a date to be announced. The Antarctica Service Medal was authorized in 1960 and is awarded not only to members of all branches of our Armed Services, but also to U.S. citizens or resident aliens who served on the Antarctic continent or in support of operations there. Special devices have been approved for display on the
Antarctica Service Medal for those recipients whose service included spending the winter
in the Antarctic region. The "Winter-over" devices include: The color of the device indicates number of winters
