I have a unique story to tell, if i recall correctly the year was 1996 and Jack was back home in North Carolina. He was the Grand Marshall for the Memorial Day Parade in Creswell,NC. I was a Deputy Sheriff, and ex-Marine myself, bringing up the rear of the parade as it traveled down the small streets of Creswell. As we rounded the back street of town, I saw Jack come out from around the corner and stand there. I quickly stopped, because just 10 minutes ago he was at the front of the parade. With about three block to I told Jack to get in. He waved at the crowd and we were able to speak for a few minutes, about the Marine Corps & Washington County, before the parade had ended and I let him out at the High School, after a firm hand shake, and a thank you from him for the ride. God Bless you Jack!!!

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast And he sat around the Legion telling stories of the past, Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, everyone. And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke, All his buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, for old Bob has passed away And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today. No he won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife, For he lived an ordinary very quiet sort of life, He held a job and raised a family, quietly going on his way; And the world won't note his passing; 'tho a soldier died today. When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state, While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great, Papers tell of their life stories from the time that they were young, But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land Some jerk who breaks his promise and cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow who in times of war and strife Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life? The politician's stipend and the style in which he lives Are sometimes disproportionate to the services he gives, While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal, and perhaps a pension small. It's so easy to forget them, for it was so long ago That our Bob's and Jim's and Johnny's went to battle, but we know It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger with your enemies at hand, Would you really want some cop-out with his ever waffling stand? Or would you want a soldier who has sworn to defend His home, his kin, and country, and would fight until the end? He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin But his presence should remind us, we may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start. If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline in the paper that might say: OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY. Author Unknown

Mr. Lucas, You are an amazing man! Thanks for sharing your story with all who has read it, and those who will. My G-Uncle, Lt. Col. Tom M. Trotti was at Iowa Jima, he was with the 5th Marine division. He was one of those who did not survive, as he was killed on 02-22-45. Here is what happened:the relief of front line units while under heavy fire brought about confusion and disruption. Information concerning adjacent units was insufficient, contact not what it might have been, and attack orders hastily issued. Lieutenant Colonel Tom M. Trotti's 3d Battalion extended 200 yards into the 4th Division's zone and received demoralizing fire from a bluff on its right flank. This elevation was 100 feet high in spots, and ran down the west center of the island, curving across the 5th Division's front near Airfield Number 2. Rather than attempt immediate adjustment of lines by lateral movement, Trotti decided to accomplish this move gradually while advancing toward the O-2 line. But heavy Japanese fire from the dominant ground on the right flank permitted only minor gains and caused many casualties. At about 0940, while attempting to pull his battalion together, Lieutenant Colonel Trotti was killed, as was his operations officer, Major William R. Day. I am so thankful that heros like you were able to return to your families and loved ones to tell us your story. God Bless You, Ginger Morton

Hello Jack. Sorry it has taken so long to say this, but in my very young years I never realized the importance of what you and every other soldier has done for us. Thank you so much for our freedom.

Greetings, I finished listening to your book "Indestructable" today and found it facinating. I served some time on Guam back in the 80's whilst in the Air Force and could still see the bomb craters, Japanese caves and fortifications. I visited the village where the last Japanese soldier surrendered and met the people he surrendered to. I also talked to some of the surviving Chamarros (the native people) about the brutality they endured under Japanese rule. You did a brave thing to save your comrades and suffered greatly for it. Though it was 40 years later, I still could see the evidence of what you were fighting against and understand what you were fighting for. I have a small collection of WWII rifles (m1903's, M1917's, M1's, and an Arisaka Type 99) that I have picked up over the last couple of years as a piece of history of a time long gone. Several vets have asked to fire them when I have been at the range, most of which haven't held one since the war. Once of my co-workers has a father who fought at Tarawa and Iwo Jima (he remains silent about his experiences). My co-worker wanted to see how the weapons his father had used actually felt when fired. He took one shot with the m1903A3 and quit. The kick was too much for him. After some coaxing, he fired the M1 and was able to get through a couple of clips (everyone stops to listen for the famous "ping!") before having to stop. All I can say is you guys had to be some tough S.O.B.'s to have to endure what you did. My hat is off to you.

Dear Mr. Jack Lucas, I was watching a documentary on the History channel about Iwo Jima (Sulphur Island). It was an indept look at the battle , probably the best I've ever seen for WWII. There were a lot of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients commenting on the battle during the course of the documentary. How horrifying it must have been to a lot those young brave men going in. So I decided to check on the internet about Iwo Jima. I came across on link that mentioned Medal of Honor recipients from the 3rd,4th and 5th Marine divisions. I had some relatives who fought in WWII, but they had mostly fought in Belgium,Italy and Germany. I came across your name and was intrigued. It says you came from North Carolina. My relatives as I've been told came from North Carolina to Mississippi and Alabama. Don't know if we're related but if we are not I'm still proud we share the same last name. My great uncle fought in the Battle of the Bulge and he too survived but with shrapnel from German rifle fire and some frost bite. He's still living also. I'm proud to say I also served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm,(18th Abn Corps). As I think about it there isn't any comparison considering what you and your buddies went through. I just want to thank you and all those who were there and those that are still there. Without your sacrifices everybody and I mean everybody wouldn't enjoy what we have here in the greatest nation on earth. My family and I would like to wish you a happy birthday on Feb. 14th and many more to come. God bless you and Mrs. Ruby. Sincerely, Gregory Lucas

After researching your time on Iwo , I felt like I needed to thank you for your sacrifice and what you did was beyond courage. It is strange but I was assigned to A / 1-26 when it was reactivated in April of 1966. I remember your picture at Bn HQ. We left for Viet Nam in June of 66 and I stayed there until Feb of 68 as a grunt. Message from an European to American servicemen past and present : You may have the feelings that europeans do not hold americans in high regard. That now when you are busy fighting terrorism we leave you alone in the midst of battle. But not everyone here thinks or feels like that. Lots of people here stand together with you. America has stood for what was right in the past and stands for what is right now. Where freedom is challenged by evil, american brave men and women fight and die to secure that freedom for each of us. I want to thank all american servicemen who fought for us in the Second World War "lest we forget." By this I try to express my thanks for what you have done and given for my freedom. I have the greatest respect and appreciation for you. You liberated us and gave us our countries back. There are lots of people here in Europe who will never forget your sacrifices. Also thank you for trasmiting the same ideals of liberty freedom and peace to your sons and daughters who keep defending the free world, our world. We have not forget, You have not been forgotten. We are passing our gratitude for what you did down to our children and grandchildren. We will do this by teaching our children the price that was paid for their freedom. We will try to pass this feeling of gratitude to generations to come, for the people you liberated have not broken faith with you. We remember what you did and the price you paid. I will help my children understand the enormity of the gift that they each have been given. I will teach my children to see the price that was paid for their freedom. That thousands of americans died to assure that they, european children, are free. That those who died sacrificed everything they held dear so that we could be free. The knowledge of how precious this gift is will help them understand that these men did not die in vain. That even if we don't remember or know the names of those who died for us we should hold sacred the cause for which they died. I will tell my children that lots of american servicemen gave their lives with no expectation of anything in return. This gift of freedom was fought for and was given to me with no strings attached. I will tell my children that they gave their lives and their legacy lives inside me and my only responsibility now is that I protect it well so I can pass it down to my children and all future generations. That only if we live under the delusion that we are somehow entitled to freedom have we broken faith with those who died. I will tell them that we are living their legacy and we must not be oblivious to their sacrifice. American Servicemen : again....Thank you, I have the greatest respect and appreciation for you. R. What a web site! What a man!....a true American Hero. My Dad, M/Sgt. Luther Thompson, did the same as far as falsifying age info. He was 15 at the time he enlisted but listed his age as 17. He was at Pearl Harbor..Hickam Field when it was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941. He went into the AAF in 1922 and when it branched out he joined the Air Force and permanently retired in 1956. Thank you so very much for allowing me to visit and share in this history. God Bless Always, Iris

Good Lord, what a story! What a web site! My daddy died in Ahoskie NC in January 1941. The next year or so I sold his old .22 pistol to a "Jack Lucas" about my age (who I understood was originally from Plymouth). We took it into a field near Ahoskie to check it out. Were you ever in Ahoskie?? Is it possible that you are the Jack Lucas that bought that old pistol?? If you are, I will be glad to send you back the $5 that "that Jack Lucas" paid me for it. I'd like it to be a gift in appreciation for what you have done. ~ Thank you.

Mr. Lucas: I was given an assignment by one of my Sergeants to give a class on Medal of Honor recipients from the Marine Coprs and the history of the Medal. After reading your story on 2 different web sites, I feel compelled to share your story with the rest of the Marines I work with. If it is at all possible, I would like to maybe set up a time when I could contact you at your residence when I present my class so we could all matbe ask you a few questions and all have the honor of meeting and speaking with a living part of our Corps' great and illustrious history. I hope to hear from you soon. Semper Fidelis!

I heard your taped interview on Friday ,November 9 on KSEV 700 am in Houston, Texas. My boss, Glenn Lee, a Hattiesburg native, had called Edd Hendee, talk show host, to tell him about you and your experience. I had read about the Iwo Jima experience but never as much as I heard on the radio. I'm truly fortunate my six year old son was able to hear the interview and the inspiration and example your story tells. We have our freedoms because of the sacrifice and dedication and values of the soldiers and marines like you and others. Thank you.
