Stories of American Heroes - Brought to you from the "Home of Heroes" - Pueblo, Colorado |
June 1, 2005
The Honorable Congressman John Salazar
House Office Building
1431 Longworth House Building
Washington, DC 20515Dear Congressman Salazar:
The Pueblo Medal of Honor Foundation has a long history in our area of working to help draw positive attention to the men who receive the Medal of Honor. It began with hosting gatherings that brought Pueblo’s Medal of Honor recipients to Pueblo so our population could meet and greet these hometown heroes and honor them. From that began the sculpture project that became the Pueblo Medal of Honor Memorial at Heroes Plaza in front of the Pueblo Convention Center. Then drawing national attention to Pueblo, we hosted the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s national convention in 2000 and unveiled those sculptures at that time. We are also the group that helps maintain and care for the Memorial. Since then we have held a convention that formed a society that will help the families of Medal of Honor recipients stay in touch with each other after their recipient passes away. We act as a speakers bureau locally regarding the Pueblo Medal of Honor Memorial and are a sponsor of the HomeofHeroes.com website created and maintained by Doug Sterner.
Because of our continued interest in the Medal of Honor, and our high regard for these special heroes, we are extremely pleased to hear of your legislation to make March 25 known as “National Medal of Honor Day”. We fully support your initiative and if you need support from us, we are here to help you, just let us know what we can do to help.
Also, we are in support of your effort to create legislation that would make it illegal to claim in any fashion to be a Medal of Honor recipient.
Please let us know what we can do to get the word out to other legislators, our state, our region and our community.
Warmest regards,
John A. VernaChairman
