Stories of American Heroes - Brought to you from the "Home of Heroes" - Pueblo, Colorado |
"Lighten Up, Francis."
Thank goodness for Rep. John Salazar (D-Colo.). He nipped those naughty Purple Heart posers in the bud - you know, all those jerks who Salazar fears are trying to pick up chicks with fake Purple Hearts, as the two fun-loving guys played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson do in the summer blockbuster "Wedding Crashers."
Salazar is boasting that he convinced New Line Cinema to remove its spoofy Purple Heart "crasher's kit" from the movie's official Web site. "If any movie goers take the advice of the 'Wedding Crashers' and try to use fake Purple Hearts to get girls, they may wind up picking up an FBI agent instead," Salazar said in a statement.
Under legislation proposed by Salazar, bozos like that would be charged with a crime for falsely impersonating a decorated veteran.
The Congressman is convinced that "The Wedding Crashers" and its Web site's obnoxious tutorial on how to pick up chicks and navigate boozy parties would cause real problems. The Web site, which was taken down, said: "Carrying a Purple Heart in your jacket guarantees you attention, admiration, and plenty of free booze. To get one of these babies, some dudes have to prove their physical, mental and spiritual strength, with great feats of bravery on the battlefield. All you need to do is press the button below." And voila! A fake Purple Heart to print out.
Oh thank you Congressman Salazar, for saving women everywhere from these
horrible impostors!
RESPONSE
To The Editor
I am a staunch conservative and wrote many editorials supporting the re-election of President George W. Bush, but am also a former Special Forces (Green Beret) officer who served in the Viet Nam War and am very disappointed in Mort Kondrake’s Heard on the Hill column sarcastically poking fun at Congressman John Salazar (D, CO) for his proposal of the STOLEN VALOR ACT, and righteous indignation over the portrayal of the young men (protagonists) in the partying, macho, coming-of-age comedy THE WEDDING CRASHERS, who carry phony Purple Heart credentials to pick up women. Does Mr. Kondrake, who I noticed has never served in the military, have any idea how much we appreciate Congressman Salazar’s efforts, which are privately applauded by most of the members of the apolitical Military Order of the Purple Heart, Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and other hallowed military service organizations? Mr Kondrake, you did not lose best friends, legs, arms, spleens, kidneys, lungs, bones, or your innocence while earning the right to wear the Purple Heart. Yet, you ridiculed a Congressman for trying to stop all the phonies who have no right whatsoever to wear medals reserved for those braves souls who did indeed earn the right to wear them? You call yourself a Conservative. And, apparently just to attack a democrat, you belittled a medal like the Purple Heart, which is a less-than-adequate trade or recompense for the loss of one’s life or limbs. Shame on you and shame on Roll Call for publishing such a thoughtless attack. As a Bush-supporting, speech-making, editorial- writing, proud, American veteran, and Republican, I highly applaud you, Congressman Salazar for standing up for our dignity, honor, and exclusivity, and I know I speak for millions of grateful veterans, and millions who have lost respect for you Mr. Kondrake.
