Douglas Sterner Profile
Hi, I'm Douglas Sterner, your tour guide. Thank you for taking a few minutes to get to know me better before we begin our tour.

I was born in Denver, Colorado on Thanksgiving Day in 1985. My dad nicknamed me "Turk" (short for Turkey) for that reason. I have lived in Pueblo for the last 8 years and attend middle school here. At school I am in band, choir, and am on the merit roll.
My hobbies include ventriloquism and magic. I even started my own business called "Talented Kids" to earn extra spending money by entertaining at birthday parties. Two of my friends work for me. The picture above is a picture of me with most of my family. My older sister isn't in the picture. She is going to college to learn to be a school teacher. My older brother "Dutch" is going into the Marines. The little girl is my sister Tiffany.
I have always been interested in becoming a surgeon and am hoping to become a trauma pediatric surgeon when I grow up. For now I just kind of enjoy being a kid, running my business, and meeting new friends. I enjoy playing soccer on one of our local teams and recently started boxing. I have been active in scouting for several years. As a Cub Scout I earned every rank and finished the requirements to get the Arrow of Light award. I hope to continue in Boy Scouts all the way to Eagle.

When I was 8 years old I spoke to our City Council about my best friend Silvestre Herrera who received the Medal of Honor during World War II. I enjoyed that so much I began to speak more often. Last year I joined three other middle school students from Pueblo in testifying before both houses of the Colorado State Legislature. We were asking them to pass a bill providing special license plates for our State's two resident Medal of Honor recipients. Our bill passed unanimously and in May, 1997 both of them got brand new plates with a picture of the Medal of Honor on them. The legislature even gave a souvenir plate to each of us students.
Every day I wonder where we would be if we didn't have the brave men and women who fought to keep us safe? I am very proud to be an American. I fly my flag everyday to show that this is the country I love! I have met most of the living Medal of Honor Recipents. One of them is Silvestre Hererra who I think of as my best friend. He even invited me to his home in Glendale, Arizona and had me there for two weeks as his special guest! I can hardly wait to get back inside the museum where YOU can meet him. You can read his story in our Profiles In Courage pages.
Here are a few more pictures from my photo album for you to enjoy. Then click on the arrow to get back inside the museum where I will meet you at the "Birth of a Nation" exhibit. You can write to me at: Home of Heroes@Compuserve.com by clicking on the blue line.
Thank you and enjoy the tour,
Douglas Sterner
