Women Heroes
Of American History |
|
|
The first exhibit you will see as you enter the Hall of WOMEN Heroes is a statue of a
black man. He is Revolutionary War soldier named Robert Shirtliffe who fought for 3
years with a Massachusetts militia, and was wounded three times by both rifle fire and
bayonett. Of course the obvious question is, no matter how brave he was or how good
a soldier he became, what is he doing in a room dedicated to WOMEN heroes.
|

|
Trust me when I say "Mr. Shirtliffe" belongs here. You see, the third
time Mr. Shirtliffe was wounded in combat, major surgery had to be done to treat his
wounds. It was then that a stunned surgeon made an incredible discovery...
- Mr. Shirtliffe was a fraud...he was fighting under an
assumed name....
- Mr. Shirtliffe's real name was DEBORAH SAMPSON...he
wasn't REALLY a HE!

America's women have proven their patriotism and courage time and again throughout our
history. Here you will meet them. From women who fought side-by-side with men
in defense of freedom, to every day women with the courage to change their world, build
hospitals and universities, challenge a government that refused to let them vote, and pave
new frontiers for the future...you will meet some incredible women here. And nestled
in the alcove at the back of the room is a SPECIAL DISPLAY, a model for the long over-due
and recently dedicated Memorial to Women in Military Service to America.
