While his unit was fighting against well-entrenched troops on higher ground,
this lone soldier moved off alone to the enemy's flanks. Using hand grenades and a
tommy gun, he single- handedly knocked out the first machine gun nest, then attacked and
destroyed a second. Enemy soldiers in a third position saw the sergeant approaching
and quickly surrendered. Turning his prisoners over to his support squad, he moved
out to continue the "mop up", capturing even more enemy....at least seventeen in
all. And he still wasn't done.
Later in the day the brave sergeant saw three enemy tanks approaching.
Courageously he took up an exposed position 75 yards in front of them, leveling a bazooka
and knocking out the first tank. As the crew of the disabled tank dismounted he
rushed forward killing them with his Tommy Gun. The two remaining tanks fled in the
face of the fierce warrior to dared to match flesh and blood against the might of heavy
armor. And STILL he wasn't done.
Returning, he assisted two wounded men for nearly a mile in reaching safety.
