Ideas and Resources for Schools |
|
Every Veterans' Day and each Memorial Day the students from Doyle Coopers 7th Grade Social Studies class at Roncalli Middle School in Pueblo, Colorado make a volunteer field trip to Roselawn Cemetery. There they spend time visiting the grave site of a hero who died here in 1921, Mr. Warren C. Dockum. Mr. Dockum's distinctive headstone speaks volumes of his heroism, it bears the gold imprint of the Medal of Honor. The exercise itself is a part of Mr. Cooper's over-all effort to teach Civil War history. Students quickly become personally involved when they come into contact with the hero buried here. On a more subtle level, the project has moved from a historical learning experience for many however, and become a source of renewed appreciation for our veterans, our heroes, and patriotism. The students in Pueblo's schools have taken a very active interest in our Medal of Honor heroes. Of the 30,000 students in our two school districts, more than 75% have not only met one of our few remaining living recipients, but many have actually touched the Medal, held it in their hand, and heard personally the stories of patriotism and service that led to its presentation. |

| What is so unique about Pueblo that our youth have been afforded
such tremendous opportunities? Only that our teachers and school administrators have
taken initiative to remember these heroes. ARE THESE AND SIMILAR OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO YOUR SCHOOL? ABSOLUTELY! As incredible as it may sound, with just a little effort your students can be communicating with a Medal of Honor recipient, perhaps even meeting PERSONALLY with one. We have designed these pages to provide ideas for teachers, youth organizations, veterans groups, and others to provide a starting point. Where it goes from there is limited by your own imagination and efforts.
