The Wall of Honor |
|
If you've visited our home page you have already learned that the PHYSICAL structure for the Hall of Heroes calls for it to be built in the actual shape of the Medal of Honor and laid out with three separate floors, each containing several exhibits. The Wall of Honor is the MAIN exhibit of the first and PRIMARY floor. It is not so much an exhibit about Medal of Honor heroes as it is a study in American History. Since 1776 NO GENERATION of Americans has been spared the responsibility of defending freedom through force of arms. A visit to the WALL OF HONOR is the opportunity to learn the chronology of our Nation's struggles to defend freedom and human dignity both at home and around the world since the inception of the award during the Civil War. |

The inside surface of the museum's walls are laminated with polished brass, bearing the names of each of our Medal of Honor recipients, listed CHRONOLOGICALLY by grouped by WAR and BATTLE. Photos, historic paintings, and other memorabilia interspersed among the names highlight the different battles and the men who fought them. This wall is not so much about a medal and the men who received it as it is about America and ALL veterans. |
Facing the wall of honor are 3-D exhibits to the struggles of each period. The model seen at right depicts the period of the Civil War, as well as some of its heroes. If you look closely, on the extreme left, you will see a black Union soldier propped up on a cane and holding a flag. You can read the story of Sergeant William Carney, the man depicted there, in our PROFILES IN COURAGE site, and see the original photograph on which this part of the exhibit is based. All of the 3-D exhibits will follow similar designs and patterns. |
