Stories of American Heroes - Brought to you from the "Home of Heroes" - Pueblo, Colorado |
President Dwight D. Eisenhower while presenting the Medal of Honor to Raymond G. Murphy
Pueblo, Colorado....
...."Home Of Heroes"

Pueblo, Colorado is the only city in America with FOUR living recipients of our Nation's highest award for heroism in combat, the Medal of Honor. The four: William J. Crawford (WWII), Carl L. Sitter and Raymond G. Murphy (Korea) and Drew D. Dix (Vietnam) are a source of both pride and inspiration to the men, women and children of our city.
In 1993 the 103rd United States Congress, in recognition of this unique fact, proclaimed Pueblo to be America's "Home of Heroes". Since that time more than a third of our Nation's living Medal of Honor recipients have visited Pueblo to participate in school assemblies and other patriotic programs of inspiration and education. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society has further selected Pueblo as the site for their reunion and convention in the fall of the year 2,000. At that time a local memorial will be unveiled featuring statues of our four hometown heroes. The project is being lead by Mr. Robert Rawlings, editor of our local newpaper, and Mr. William K. Coors; and is further funded by numerous state and local businesses and involved citizens.
This Hall of Heroes site is currently under construction, with an expected opening date of January 30th, 1999. The finished project in the Hall of Heroes will include displays to each of Pueblo's four Medal of Honor heroes in three phases:
Along the way you will meet some of our other heroes. You will learn about Pueblo's unique award for recognizing distinctive Americans, the "JIMMIE E. HOWARD MEMORIAL AWARD. This prestigious award has been presented to such great Americans as the rescue workers from the Oklahoma City bombing tragedy and entertainer to the troops Mr. Wayne Newton.
You will also learn how local students have become involved in patriotic activities not only here, but around the Nation. You will see how two middle schools successfully sponsored legislation honoring our heroes in two different states, and much more.
Please check back with us when we open this site. We know you will not be disappointed. In the meantime you can either:
