WASHINGTON, D.C. Our Nation Finds a Home

Imagine owning a house that you have never even seen! That is the situation for many Americans where our Capitol City is concerned. Washington, D.C. belongs to YOU, and to me....and to EVERY American. It is our capitol city, the seat of our government, and the home of every citizen in the United States. |

In addition to replicas of our Founding Documents and examples of our Flag from 1776 to present, the BIRTH OF A NATION exhibit at the center of the First Floor bears a large table-top replica of the mall in Washington, D.C. (The mall is NOT a large shopping center, it is the name given to the area from the Capitol Building to the Potomac River where you can see historic buildings, memorials, and artifacts.) For many Americans, it is the first glimpse of the traditional "Town Square" concept. |
The story of how our capitol came to be is quite interesting, including a rebellion by Revolutionary War veterans, a "hostage incident" during the Constitutional Convention, and a diplomatic dinner hosted by Thomas Jefferson to effect a compromise between the northern and southern states. As you enter this display we will share this rich history with you before taking you on a virtual tour of our Nation's Capitol. |
