Captain Urban led his men in repeated attacks in the months following the D-Day invasion at Normandy. On June 14 he brazenly exposed himself to enemy fire and, firing a bazooka, destroyed two tanks. Later that same day he was wounded in the leg but refused evacuation and continued to lead his men. The following day he was twice severely wounded, but again refused evacuation until his company's attack has been successfully completed. Sent to England for treatment of his multiple wounds, and hearing of severe losses by his company, Captain Urban without authorization left the hospital and hitchhiked to his unit, now engaged near Saint-Lo, France, and held up enemy positions after two supporting tanks had been stopped. One tank was destroyed, the other devoid of a commander, and Captain Urban though limping from his unhealed wounds, located a tank lieutenant and directed a renewed assault. When the lieutenant and a sergeant were killed, Urban dashed through a hail of fire to mount the tank, man its machinegun, and route the enemy. Later, when wounded in the neck and unable to speak above a whisper, Captain Urban refused evacuation until the enemy had been routed near an important crossing on the Meuse River.
