Earned The Medal of Honor During the Indian Campaigns For heroism March 25 & 27, 1873 at Turret Mountain, AZ

In 1872 Lieutenant Colonel George Crook was sent to the Arizona Territory to bring an end to years of warfare with the Indians by negotiating peace and moving the Indian tribes to reservations. By fall he had brought relative peace after crafting a treaty with Cochise. In November he began a winter campaign to make life miserable for those renegade Indians who still chose to fight. Under pressure from cavalry patrols, he knew they would be forced to retreat into the mountains to try to survive the snow and low temperatures. The target area was the Tonto Basin where Western Apache bands and Yavapais had been raiding and eluding troops for several years. One of the major battles in this series of winter campaigns occurred at Turret Mountain, Arizona, on March 25, 1873. Private Eben Stanley was one of four soldiers cited for "Gallantry in engagements" at the Turret Mountain battle that resulted in more than 50 Yavapai Indians were killed. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were Sergeant Daniel Bishop and First Sergeant James Hill (5th Cavalry), and First Sergeant William Allen (23d U.S. Infantry). Private Stanley was also cited for another engagement two days later.
