Walter Goodale Morrill

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
    Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
    Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
    From the sky.
All is well, safel
y rest,
    God is nigh.

Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
    Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
  Friend, good night.

Born:  November 30, 1840 at Williamsburg, ME

Entered Service in the US Army from Brownville, ME

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism November 07, 1863 at Rappahannock Station, VA

Died:  March 03, 1935 at the age of 94

Captain Walter Morrill was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership in action against a numerically superior Confederate force at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, where the rebel forces held a fortified semi-circle on the north bank of the rive on the night of November 7, 1863. In the darkness of that night, an assault was ordered on the enemy's works. Though Captain Morrill's men were not among those ordered forward, he along with about fifty men, voluntarily engaged in the attack with about 250 other men. Though vastly outnumbered, Captain Morrill led his men with such valor and daring that their charge in the darkness gave the impression to the enemy that their number was stronger than they were, compelling the rebels into confusion and defeat. Captain Morrill dashed through the works and entrenchment where with his men, he succeeded in wresting from the enemy an important pontoon bridge, and cutting off the enemy's retreat. The initial assault was then joined by other units in a route of the enemy force that resulted in the capture of eight battle flags, four pieces of artillery, and 1,600 prisoners. Sergeant Otis Roberts of the 6th Maine also earned a Medal of Honor in this action.
