Stories of American Heroes - Brought to you from the "Home of Heroes" - Pueblo, Colorado

Joseph Andrew Mitchell

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
    Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
    Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
    From the sky.
All is well, safel
y rest,
    God is nigh.

Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
    Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
  Friend, good night.

Born:  November 27, 1876 at Philadelphia, PA

Entered Service in the US Navy from Pennsylvania

Earned The Medal of Honor During the China Relief Expedition For heroism July 12, 1900 at Peking, China

Died:  June 09, 1925 at the age of 48

Early at the turn of the century a rebel force in China that called itself the Society of "Righteous and Harmonious Fists", subsequently called the "Boxers", initiated a rebellion in China that threatened the legations of several nations in Peking and Tientsen. The 1st Regiment (Marines) under Major Littleton Waller arrived in China on June 19 and tried to seize Tientsin, but was driven back. On June 23 Waller's Marines finally entered the city, forcing the Chinese forces to retreat to Peking where the situation was critical, the legation surrounded and protected only by a small International force including the Marine Guard. During this period, on July 12 Gunner's Mate First Class so distinguished himself that he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Among his accomplishments was his legendary skill with the Colt gun, and his later efforts to put in working order an old brass cannon that became a historic and well-known symbol of the conflict. In another battle, under hazardous circumstances, he captured an enemy flag. On August 14, in the last days of the battle to enter Peking, Gunner's Mate Mitchell was wounded while still valiantly performing his duties.
