Born:  June 11, 1845 at County Roscommon, Ireland

Entered Service in the US Army from St. Louis, MO

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Indian Campaigns For heroism June 17, 1876 at Rosebud River, MT.

Died:  September 27, 1918 at the age of 73

On June 16, 1876, General Crook sent 800 cavalry troopers and 200 Crow Indians to engage the hostile Sioux at their main camp along the Rosebud River in Montana. The Sioux force encountered in the Rosebud River battle the following day pitted this force against more than 3,000 hostile Indian warriors, but the determined soldiers routed the Sioux and pushed them back five miles. Michael McGann was one of three First Sergeants to earn the Medal of Honor in this battle, during which the senior non-coms were conspicuous by their examples of leadership and courage. First Sergeant McGann was cited for "Gallantry in action." Medals of Honor were also earned by First Sergeants Joseph Robinson and John Shingle. Trumpeteer Elmer Snow also earned the Medal of Honor during this battle.
