FIRST AWARD
John King was a watertender aboard the USS Vicksburg which was at sea on May 29, 1901 when an accident occurred in its boiler room. Watertender King was cited for "heroism in the line of his profession" for his actions following this dangerous situation and was awarded his FIRST Medal of Honor. His SECOND award of the Medal of Honor, for a similar act of heroism, occurred eight years later aboard the USS Salem.
SECOND AWARD
John King was a watertender aboard the USS Salem which was at sea on September 13, 1909 when an accident occurred in its boiler room. Watertender King received his SECOND Medal of Honor for "heroism in the line of his profession" for his actions following this dangerous situation. His FIRST award was earned 8 years earlier aboard the USS Vicksburg in an almost identical situation.
