Born:  September 12, 1843 at New York, NY

Entered Service in the US Army from New York, NY

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism May 05, 1864 at Wilderness Campaign, VA

Died:  December 27, 1918 at the age of 75

In May 1864 after assuming command of the Union Army, General Grant launched his offensive against Confederate General Robert E. Lee, marching towards Richmond, Virginia. By May 5 most of Grant's army had crossed the Rapidan River, where for three days they engaged the Confederate forces in the opening battles of the "Wilderness Campaign". On the first day of that battle Private James Evans earned the Medal of Honor when he went out in front of the line under a fierce fire and, in the face of the rapidly advancing enemy, rescued the regimental flag with which the color bearer had fallen.
