Entered Service in the US Army from New York, NY

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism June 30, 1863 at Hanover Courthouse, VA

Died:  March 15, 1902 at the age of 60

On June 30, 1863, the 5th New York Cavalry was passing through the village of Hanover, Pennsylvania, fifteen miles east of Gettysburg. The column was suddenly attacked and combat with the Confederate forces followed. Private Thomas Burke and Corporal Rickey saw a Confederate flag held by two mounted rebel soldiers, and simultaneously started towards it. Within 200 yards of the flag, Corporal Rickey's horse was shot out from under him, and Private Burke continued on alone, capturing the flag amid fire from both sides, and taking to two enemy flag bearers prisoner. Though Private Burke's action is not usually listed with the 63 men who earned Medals of Honor during the battle at Gettysburg on July 1 - 3, his was because of its proximity to that battlefield, perhaps the first of the Gettysburg campaign.
