William Sully Beebe

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
    Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
    Falls the night.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
    From the sky.
All is well, safel
y rest,
    God is nigh.

Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
    Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
  Friend, good night.

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism April 23, 1864 at Cane River Crossing, LA

Died:  October 12, 1898 at the age of 57

First Lieutenant William Beebe earned the Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership in one of the deadliest, although successful, attacks of the Civil War. He was serving as an Ordinance officer at Cane River Crossing, Louisiana, on April 23, 1864 when Union forces were ordered to attack the enemy in a strongly fortified position. He recalled: "I was ordered by the Chief of Staff to join the assaulting column, to urge necessity of instant attack, as I knew the rear-guard was then engaged and we had to lay a pontoon bridge to cross the Cane River. The division was deployed for attack on Monett's Bluff; I stated the necessity of instant assault and offered to lead it. The offer was declined, but on its renewal promptly accepted. I was the first man on the bluff. The color guard immediately behind me lost five men out of eight, and the killed and wounded in an affair of ten minutes were about two hundred."
