TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

Major McGuire
led a group of P-38s flying as cover for bombers striking the
Mabalacat airdrome on Luzon, Philippine Islands on December 25,
1944. Attacked by enemy fighters and at times outnumbered 3 to
1, he shot down three Japanese Zeroes. After his guns jammed, he
forced a hostile plane into his wingman's line of fire. The next
day he again volunteered to lead escort fighters on a mission
against Clark Field and repeating the same self-sacrificing
bravery, he destroyed four more enemy planes, bringing his total
to 38 enemy planes destroyed.
On January 7, 1945, only weeks after his Medal of Honor action,
Major McGuire was killed while trying to save a comrade from
attack by an enemy fighter.
