TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

Captain Thomas
Kerr led a detachment of cavalry in action to secure the road
near the Union encampment near Moorefield, West Virginia, on
August 7, 1864. Without firing a shot the detachment captured an
enemy picket which was placed under guard of a rear squadron,
while Captain Kerr and his men continued on. Fording the river
in pursuit of enemy soldiers, Captain Kerr was wounded in the
face and thigh by increasing enemy fire, and his horse was
killed and fell on him. While the remainder of his detachment
completed their ford of the river, Captain Kerr pulled himself
from under his dead horse and, seeing the colors of the 8th
Virginia Cavalry (Confederate States of America) nearby, though
wounded and in great pain, he rushed the color bearer who was
attempted to mount and flee. Striking down the enemy soldier,
Captain Kerr captured his colors, mounted the rebel's horse, and
then rejoined his company in their pursuit of the fleeing
Confederates.
