TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

Lieutenant
Colonel Howard led a P-51 fighter group supporting bombers over
Oschersleben, Germany in a bombing raid on January 11, 1944.
When the bombers were attacked by numerous fighters, Colonel
Howard's group engaged the enemy. While destroying one enemy
fighter, he lost contact with his group. Then he saw the bombers
being heavily attacked with no friendly fighters on hand. Not
waiting to reassemble his group, he attacked single-handed more
than 30 German planes, destroying three and probably destroying
and damaging others. Although three of his guns failed and his
fuel supply became dangerously low, he continued his attacks
against almost insuperable odds in an effort to protect the
American bombers.
