TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

In May 1864
after assuming command of the Union Army, General Grant launched
his offensive against Confederate General Robert E. Lee, marching
towards Richmond, Virginia. By May 5 most of Grant's army had
crossed the Rapidan River, where for three days they engaged the
Confederate forces in the opening battles of the "Wilderness
Campaign". On the first day of that battle Sergeant Peter
Grace saw one of his comrades taken prisoner by two Confederate
guards. Without hesitation he rushed to the rebel guards, knocking
down one and compelling the other to surrender, thereby rescuing
his comrade.
