TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

In an engagement
with a hostile Indian force at Big Dry Fork, Arizona, on July 17,
1882, Second Lieutenant Thomas Cruse went to the aid of a wounded
soldier. In a night attack on the Indian camp, Private McClellan
fell wounded. The Indians were so close, Second Lieutenant Cruse
called out to the wounded man to remain quiet so the enemy could
not locate him. He then returned fire on the hostile force,
charging them with his carbine to keep them under cover while
Blacksmith Martin came up to remove the wounded man and help him
to safety. Also earning Medals of Honor in this action were First
Lieutenant Frank West, Second Lieutenant George Morgan and First
Sergeant Charles Taylor.
