General Walker
repeatedly accompanied his units on bombing missions deep into
Japanese-held territory from September 5, 1942 to January 5,
1943. From lessons personally gained under combat conditions, he
developed a highly efficient technique for bombing when opposed
by enemy fighters and antiaircraft fire. On January 5, 1943,
facing extremely heavy antiaircraft fire and determined enemy
fighters, he led a B-17 daylight bombing attack against shipping
at Rabaul, New Britain, resulting in direct hits on nine enemy
vessels. During this action, his airplane was disabled and
forced down by an overwhelming number of enemy fighters. General
Walker was presumed killed, and remains missing in action.
