  • Five Marines received BOTH the Army and Navy Medal of Honor for the same action.  These were the last men to become DOUBLE RECIPIENTS of the Medal of Honor.

  • Of nearly 2,500 Medal of Honor awards prior to World War I, only 49 were posthumous.  During World War I Medal of Honor recipients had a 27% mortality rate, the highest in history to that point and nearly equal the rate of posthumous awards for all prior wars/actions.

  • There are no living World War I Medal of Honor recipients.  The last of these heroes, Edouard Izac, died on January 18, 1990.
