On August 21 a Naval seaplane pilot earned the
first Medal of Honor by an American airman in Austria. One month
later near Pensacola, Florida a second Naval aviator earned the Medal of
Honor for his heroism following a non-combat air accident.
These two first heroes of the air
established a legacy that would soon be followed by four Army and two Marine Corps aviators in the closing weeks of The Great War.
