With
the Spanish-American War all but over, little remained but mop-up operations,
and negotiations to finally end the war. Those mop-up details could
however, prove to be as dangerous as combat itself. Over a dangerous
two-day period in the last week of July, crews bent to the task of
clearing mines from the harbor at Guantanamo Bay, destroying 27 of the
deadly devices and earning four men the last Medals of Honor of the
Spanish-American War.
