The Ground War . |
|
The ground war began on June 10th when 623 Marines under Colonel Robert Huntington landed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Moving quickly inland, the Marines established their first position overlooking the bay at Camp McCalla. Though the landing and first 24 hours at Cuba was without resistance, the lull was broken by two days of violent ambush from the Spanish at the city. On June 14th the Marines went on the offensive, working their way towards the Cuzco Well, where the first major ground battle of the Spanish-American War was bitterly fought. Two Marines earned Medals of Honor in what would be the last ground action for the Leathernecks. Their decisive victory at Cuzco convinced the Spanish Commanders to pull their forces back to the city. |
