Fifty-two Medals of Honor were awarded for action near Cienfuegos, Cuba on May 11th. All of the citations read simply: "During the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos...Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, he set an example throughout this action." The simplicity of these citations can not detract from the extreme heroism displayed by detachments of Navy Bluejackets and Marines from the USS Marblehead and USS Nashville. Making their way towards the shoreline in small launches from their respective ships, directly under the guns and heavy enemy fire, the brave men dredged up and cut the important underwater cables that linked the military forces at Cienfuegos with it commanders and the rest of the world. Twenty-six men from each of the two warships that
participated in the heroic mission, were awarded Medals of Honor for their
intrepid actions. |
