In the Spring of 1871 a survey party from Admiral Rodger's Asiatic Fleet
was fired upon by Korean forts on the Salee River. In response, on
June 10th Admiral Rodgers dispatched a force of Navy bluejackets and
Marines to attack the forts on Kanghwado Island. During the 2-day
"weekend war", the American forces landed and captured five
Korean forts including one called the Citadel. Fifteen Medals of
Honor were awarded for heroism during the period.
